The exposome is a concept that links non-genetic factors of health and measures all of a person's exposures throughout life and the relationship of those exposures to health effects. Most diseases are complex - the exposome is about assessing the complex interactions between all exposures throughout the life course and also developing methods to do this. The exposome reinforces the idea that each person's disease is the product of their individual history of exposures superimposed on their underlying genetic susceptibility.
For four decades, RECETOX has studied the complex relationship between humans and the environment, building knowledge and understanding about the environmental and health risks linked to toxic substances to create a healthier, safer, and more sustainable future for all.

Pioneering technologies are currently transforming research in the life sciences (https://lifescience-ri.eu): structural biology, chemical screening, advanced imaging or data analysis. For this kind of multidisciplinary research access to high-end technologies and services is essential. But in most cases, it is not easily available for every scientist. ATHLETE (Advancing Tools for Human Early Lifecourse Exposome Research and Translation) is a European-funded project that aims to better understand and prevent health effects of numerous environmental hazards and their mixtures, starting from the earliest stages of life.
The project aims to develop a human exposome toolbox that can be used to evaluate the effects of a large number of environmental exposures in individuals, as well as in communities, in order to design policies and interventions to prevent or reduce their health impact.
