EIRENE aims to create new capacities for human exposome research and assessment of risks associated with environmental exposures by developing a network of harmonized laboratories, environmental studies, population cohorts, and databases. EIRENE should advance our understanding of the exposome's role in chronic disease development and play a key role in developing new strategies and interventions for protecting population health, preventing chronic diseases, and advancing precision medicine.

Protecting children’s health – Addressing chemical exposures

Co-hosted by MEP Christophe Clergeau with support from the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), ATHLETE scientists from across Europe came to Brussels to brief policymakers on how they can protect children’s health from chemical exposures. Featuring the latest scientific findings from the ATHLETE project, the event focused on how EU policymakers can take action to address chemical pollution.

The Moonshot Forum laid the foundation for translating the concept of the exposome into public health practice

Comprehensive characterization of human exposome - a first step to translate its potential into medicine and public health practice - demands a coordinated international effort involving governments, organizations, scientists, funders, the technology sector and the public. The Exposome Moonshot Forum held in the Bloomberg Centre in Wahington, D.C. in May 12-15, 2025 aimed to gather these diverse stakeholders to collaboratively translate the exposome from concept to utility.

EIRENE's and PARC's side event on COPs 2025

The RECETOX Centre has been operating at the science-to-policy interface at the national, European and global levels for two decades. As the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre (SCRC) for capacity building and technology transfer it supports the implementation of the global conventions protecting human health from the chemical risks and presents its activities at the Conferences of Parties of these conventions at the regular basis.

EIRENE's mission is to establish a sustainable research infrastructure enabling the advancement of exposome research in Europe by bringing together complementary capacities available in the member states, harmonizing them and upgrading to address current scientific and societal challenges in the areas of chemical exposures and population health.

EIRENE's vision is to mediate an open access to the infrastructures supporting a world-class research expanding the scientific knowledge in the area of human exposome, supporting the development of new technologies and translation of the research results to the daily lives of citizens via public-private (industry, spin-offs) or public-public (policy-making) partnerships in order to tackle a problem of non- genetic factors behind the development of chronic conditions and to improve the population health.
