On Sunday afternoon, 26 April 2026, in Barcelona, we convened a dedicated EIRENE strategic alignment meeting with international partners from Japan, the United States, Canada, and additional collaborating institutions, including the new leadership of the NIEHS, held in close succession to the Global Exposome Summit 2026.

The session served as a focused forum for advancing the transition of EIRENE from its conceptual and developmental stage toward full operational maturity. In particular, discussions centered on the articulation of implementation pathways, governance structures, and the consolidation of a coherent framework capable of supporting scalable, transnational collaboration in the exposome research landscape. Emphasis was placed on ensuring methodological interoperability and long-term sustainability across participating nodes, while maintaining alignment with emerging global standards in environmental health data integration.

Building on existing initiatives and established collaborative ecosystems such as IHEN, the Exposome Alliance, and the broader Global Exposome Framework, participants engaged in a high-level exchange on how these complementary efforts can be synergistically integrated. The dialogue underscored the importance of avoiding fragmentation within the field and instead fostering a federated, yet cohesive, research architecture capable of enabling cross-disciplinary and cross-continental knowledge transfer.

In addition, the meeting provided an opportunity to formally introduce the EIRENE initiative to prospective academic, clinical, and industry partners. These exchanges opened exploratory discussions on potential collaboration models, including data-sharing agreements, joint methodological development, and pilot implementations across diverse environmental health contexts. Particular attention was given to identifying areas of mutual interest where EIRENE could act as a catalytic platform for accelerating translational impact.

Overall, the meeting contributed to a strengthened shared understanding of strategic priorities and helped further refine the roadmap toward establishing EIRENE as a fully operational, internationally embedded initiative. The outcomes of the discussion will inform the next phase of coordination activities, with the aim of consolidating governance mechanisms and accelerating implementation across participating regions.
