EIRENE aims to create new capacities for human exposome research and assessment of risks associated with environmental exposures by developing a network of harmonized laboratories, environmental studies, population cohorts, and databases. EIRENE should advance our understanding of the exposome's role in chronic disease development and play a key role in developing new strategies and interventions for protecting population health, preventing chronic diseases, and advancing precision medicine.

Genomics meets exposomics: ushering in a new age of human health discovery

Last week, 35 leading European and American scientists gathered at the Augustinian Abbey in Brno's Old Town to develop a joint strategy for closer collaboration between genomics and exposomics research and a better understanding of the causes of chronic diseases. The meeting was organized by the European research infrastructure for exposomics, EIRENE, led by Jana Klánová from Masaryk University, and the Network for Exposomics in the US, NEXUS.

RTI Summit 2025 - Shaping the Future of Research and Technology Infrastructures

The RTI Summit 2025, held under the Danish EU Presidency, brought together leaders from across Europe to shape the future of Research and Technology Infrastructures and to introduce the new European strategy in this field. Participants explored the societal impact of RTIs and engaged in thematic sessions on emerging technologies and financing models. The summit fostered dialogue on sustainable funding and cross-sector collaboration. With over 300 participants and 40 exhibitors, the event strengthened connections among EU and national policymakers, RTI experts, industry stakeholders, research organisations, and funding agencies. EIRENE representatives attended the summit, contributing to discussions on infrastructure development and innovation in the exposome field.

ENVRI Board Meets in Marseille to Advance Innovation and Collaboration

In October 2025, the ENVRI Board convened in Marseille for a two-day in-person meeting. With representatives from 12 Research Infrastructures and invited guests in attendance, the meeting provided a platform to assess progress, exchange ideas, and coordinate efforts on shared priorities—from innovation hubs and EOSC integration to communications strategy and upcoming European funding opportunities.

EIRENE PPP Project Concludes: Laying the Foundation for Europe’s First Research Infrastructure on the Exposome

The EIRENE PPP project, funded under Horizon Europe, concluded in October 2025 after three years of intensive collaboration among leading European institutions. Its mission was to prepare the EIRENE Research Infrastructure (RI)—a pan-European platform dedicated to assessing environmental exposures and their impact on human health. Through strategic planning, technical design, stakeholder engagement, and international cooperation, EIRENE PPP laid the foundation for a sustainable, open-access infrastructure that will support cutting-edge exposome research and inform public health policy across Europe and beyond.

Santiago Exposome Symposium: Integrating Environmental Exposures into Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias

Santiago, Chile hosted the Second Latin American Exposome Symposium, bringing together over 100 scientists, clinicians, and trainees from around the world. The event fostered international collaboration and advanced understanding of how environmental exposures impact brain health and aging. During the second day, EIRENE Coordinator Jana Klanová gave a presentation titled “Setting Up an Infrastructural Landscape and Opening Access to Services for Human Exposome Research,” highlighting EIRENE’s role in shaping the future of exposome science.

Successful risk assessment training in Podgorica

A two-day training on Environmental and Human Health Risk Assessment of Chemicals in the EU – Principles and Regulatory Practices was held in hotel Ramada in Podgorica, Montenegro, 25–26 August 2025. The training was organized by the RECETOX Stockholm Convention Regional Centre in collaboration with the Centre for Eco-Toxicological Research, Montenegro in the framework of the GEF project on Update of the National Implementation Plan under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.

Vision and Mission

EIRENE's mission is to establish a sustainable research infrastructure enabling the advancement of exposome research in Europe by bringing together complementary capacities available in the member states, harmonizing them and upgrading to address current scientific and societal challenges in the areas of chemical exposures and population health.

EIRENE's vision is to mediate an open access to the infrastructures supporting a world-class research expanding the scientific knowledge in the area of human exposome, supporting the development of new technologies and translation of the research results to the daily lives of citizens via public-private (industry, spin-offs) or public-public (policy-making) partnerships in order to tackle a problem of non- genetic factors behind the development of chronic conditions and to improve the population health.
